1) SUMMARY
(1) Air stripping is a method of removing contaminants based on the principle by which highly volatile compounds like BTEX easily evaporate into the air when they get dissolved in water by the supply of air into contaminated groundwater and thus the formation of bubbles.
(2) Air strippers can be made in several types depending on how air/water contact is achieved. Of all types, tray and packed types are commonly used.
(3) Volatile compounds removable by air strippers include BTEX, MTBE, chloroethane, TCE, DCE, and PCE.

2) TRAY TYPE AIR STRIPPER
(1) Once several layers of trays have been installed atop a rectangular or circular tower structure, water is fed to the top section of the tray and air to the lower section of the tray. While the air moves to the top of the tray through the many holes made on the tray, it comes into contact with the water flowing on top of the tray, producing many bubbles. Then, volatile compounds dissolved in water become removed by the bubbles.
(2) In this physical process, after air stripping is done at the very top, the water flows down to the bottom layer of trays through the down path, triggering gradual air stripping. As the water passes several layers of trays, it eliminates almost all of the volatile compounds dissolved in water.
(3) The number of tray layers and the tray size shall be properly designed based on the type of compound, its condensation, treatment quantity and efficiency. Once the tray has been properly designed, the system can eliminate up to 99% of BTEX compounds.

3) PACKED TYPE AIR STRIPPER
(1) Fill the circular tower structure with a filling material and supply contaminated groundwater to the top of the tower to flow down through the filling, and supply clean air to the bottom of the tower so that the air rises to the top of the tower. At this time, the contaminated groundwater and air flow in opposite directions in the packing material in the Packed Tower.
(2) Groundwater is evenly distributed by gravity within the inner filling, and air flows from the lower part of the tower to the upper part through the underground water falling like a waterfall. Occurs. This mass transfer phenomenon depends on the physical and chemical properties of the contaminated groundwater, the water temperature, the ratio of the flow rate of water and air, the height of the filling layer and the physical properties of the packing material.
(3) Packed Tower can be installed in several stages for equal distribution of contaminated groundwater, and a DISTRIBUTOR is installed on each upper part of each stage so that groundwater can be evenly distributed to the packing media installed below.
(4) The design of the diameter, height, number of stages, and packing media of the packing tower should be appropriately designed according to the conditions such as the type and concentration of the contaminated groundwater, the treatment flow rate and the treatment efficiency.
